What we believe about Jesus
Who?
Christians believe, that Jesus is God's unique, eternal Son, who became fully human, yet was fully divine. He is one with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit, the triune Godhead of the Christian faith. The mystery of the Holy Trinity is that there is one God, in three persons.
What?
Christians believe that Jesus came willingly from God the Father to be the Saviour of the world. Through his life, death and resurrection, he revealed and made possible the way for humanity to be reconciled to God the creator, a relationship broken through the reality of sin, evil and human pride, arrogance and rebellion. We believe that Jesus was risen from death and later ascended to heaven, to the right hand of God the Father, a place of authority and majesty. Yet in the mystery of his divinity, Jesus is also present amongst his people here and now through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Why?
Because the God of the Christian faith is the God of love, the one, true God who created, cares for and loves all. Jesus, as God's heavenly ambassador on earth revealed this in his life and ministry. And in willingly dying on the cross, he revealed the full extent of God's love and compassion for wayward humanity – dying in our place, that we might come to know him and receive true, eternal life, our created destiny.
So What?
Good question! Christians believe that the reality of Jesus, God's Son and Saviour of the world, is good news for all who will receive in faith and believing put their trust in him for who he is and what he has done for us. This is not something to do rashly or thoughtlessly, but prayerfully, thoughtfully and reverently in humility with thanks. Repentance is an important part of the journey of faith – it means turning around from our old lives, our old patterns of belief and behaviour and committing ourselves to following Jesus in faith and living the life that is exemplified in him.
Simply speaking it means putting our trust, our faith in Jesus, believing on who he is and what he has done for each one of us. It means accepting that in Jesus, God has done all that can be done to reconcile us to himself – there's nothing we can add, we are made right through faith in Jesus, not by our own good deeds.
Christians believe in life after death, but as importantly, life before it! Jesus said "I have come that you may have life - in all its fullness" (John 10:10) Becoming a Christian is not a ticket to a trouble-free life, but it is to have a living relationship with God our creator, who loves and cares for us and has the best plan for our lives. Following Jesus is to begin on the journey to realizing and releasing our true human identity and potential.
What about you?
Do you dare ask yourself some big questions? Who am I? Why am I here? Am I truly satisfied with ‘the way things are', or might there be another way? Am I searching, yearning for something greater than myself, for something beyond my normal horizons? Is this life, and my present experience of it ‘all there is'? What happens when I die?
Remember that you are unique, precious, created by God for loving relationship with God for eternity, yet you live in a world and live a life that is alienated form Holy God by sin, evil, ignorance, rebellion and pride. Even so, God has revealed his love for you by becoming as you are, Jesus lived the life and died the death that should be yours, and in his resurrection broke the power of sin and death forever, once for all. The ‘Good News' is that if you will give your life to Jesus in response - repentance, obedience and faith, you will find reconciliation with Holy God, reunion with God your Heavenly Father.
Surely you need to respond to Jesus' offer of life, in all its fullness!
If you have access to a Bible, why not try reading about Jesus for yourself – try the gospel of Mark in the New Testament, and see what you make of him. Also, try to find a local church to attend to meet other Christians and to discover more about the Christian faith.
